The School of Meditation was delighted to provide a meditation class to participants at the annual Nursing Times Workforce Awards in late November.
The ceremony, held at iconic London venue The Brewery, celebrated the contributions and achievements of those who made a difference in nursing recruitment, retention, wellbeing, and inclusion in 2021. At the end of a year in which nurses have been put under incredible strain, SoM was honoured to be asked to contribute to a wonderful event.
Colin lead the session, supported by Katherine, during the afternoon break in proceedings, an ideal time for participants to stop, breathe and centre themselves during a busy day.
The short class we provided involved simple mindfulness exercises, giving participants the chance to simply stop, rest and bring attention to the present moment. The Stillness was there from the outset, distinctly 'felt' by the SoM team and, from their feedback, the participants.
The Nursing Times meditation class was similar to our regular Open Door sessions, which we offer six times a week, free of charge. Along with mindful awareness, Open Door sessions also feature spiritual readings from a range of traditions and faiths, and opportunities to reflect on and discuss the experience of stillness.
Practising meditation for the first time can seem like a daunting prospect, but sessions such as the one at the Nursing Times Awards provide an ideal way for people to try meditation and begin to harness its many benefits.
The meditation we teach is suitable for all people, from all backgrounds, no prior experience is required.
Holding meditation sessions at a popular and lively event like the awards showed that bringing mindful attention to our everyday lives no matter how busy we are in our activities and how hectic in our minds, is both possible and hugely beneficial.
About Open Door Sessions
The School of Meditation’s Open Door classes are an ideal way to begin exploring the practise of meditation. We hold in-person sessions at our headquarters on Holland Park Avenue, west London on Wednesdays. We also hold five online Open Door sessions each week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11am, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.
