Sixty years ago, The School of Meditation was given a technique to pass on to people here in the UK. The technique came from an ancient Indian tradition, adapted to make it ideal for people leading busy lives in the west.
The new year has been a tumultuous time for many, with the customary optimism of hopeful resolutions challenged by anxieties around the ongoing health crisis.
In these demanding circumstances, we yearn to connect with something that does not change. We crave stillness. Not inertia or boredom but a sense of profound peace that both centres and energises us. Habitually, we look for something out there in the world, but the natural stillness we seek is to be found within.
As we seek to pivot so that our attention is not taken solely by what is transient and unpredictable, it can be confusing to know where to begin, with so many options available.
In January 2021, The School of Meditation is offering a range of options for those wanting to establish a regular meditation practice, or those curious to try meditation for the first time. All of the options offered by the School are simple ways to begin to access the peace and ease of being that lie just beneath the surface of the mind.
For beginners and experienced meditators alike, 30 minute guided meditations with readings from a broad range of spiritual texts, ‘Open Door’ sessions, are held online four times a week.
Slightly longer 45 minute sessions, ‘Evening Stillness,’ are held on Tuesday evenings, online.
For a deeper dive, the four week Introductory Course commences on Wednesday 13th January at 7pm, also online. Participants are guided through simple meditation exercises, hear spiritual readings and learn about the School’s tradition. The group dynamic and the presence of an experienced tutor enables stimulating discussion and exploration. Questions that pop up during the week can be addressed at the next session, and by practising between sessions participants get the chance to see how the discipline of a daily meditation practice works for them.
Many have found that the help, guidance and support of the Introductory Course is just what they need to help them get started with meditation.

Exploring meditation is a way to set aside time for oneself, for simplicity and peace, for true rest. As we enter this new year of uncertainty, it is an opportunity to experience something unchanging.
The School of Meditation, based in London but with branches around the UK as well as abroad, is a not-for-profit meditation centre dedicated to introducing the benefits of meditation to as many people as possible. The School celebrates its 60thanniversary this year.
